Barbra Streisand reveals the stage name she could have had
On Tonight’s Show with Jimmy Fallon On Monday, the only artist to have had a number one album in six consecutive decades, Barbra Streisand, revealed some of the ways people tried to change her when she first debuted in music. Including giving it a different stage name.
“People wanted me to be called Barbara Sands,” Streisand said. “I thought, ‘What? No.’ Streisand is my name. I don’t want to change it.
Streisand, who was on the show promoting her latest album, “Release Me 2”, actually changed her name when she was 18. She went from Barbara with three ‘A’s to Barbra with two’ A’s, in an effort to add a little uniqueness without changing it too much.
In addition to trying to change her name, it appears that she also sent unsolicited suggestions for other aspects of her music career.
“For my first record, they wanted me to call it ‘Sweet and Saucy Streisand’,” said the EGOT winner. “I’m neither too sweet nor too sassy.”
Now Streisand might not like a sauce-themed album title, but her fans on Twitter seem to think it sounds appealing enough.
But really, as someone who has enjoyed continued success decade after decade, Streisand has apparently always tried to keep it simple. Even from the start.
“My first show, I remember people asking me ‘where’s my album?’,” Streisand said. “So I said, ‘Let’s call him what he is. Barbra Streisand’s album. ‘ It is what it is. You know.”
Tonight’s Show with Jimmy Fallon aired weekday evenings at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
