Dr. Michael de Vries of Winmalee Medical Center has been recognized for his outstanding contribution to training the next generation of general practitioners.
He was named GP Synergy Supervisor of the Year for the Nepean, Western and Northern Sydney Training Region.
A longtime generalist supervisor, Dr de Vries and some of his peers decided in the 1990s that they needed to participate in the training and education of junior physicians to help nurture the next generation.
âI am always enthusiastic about the educational aspect of general medicine, which I still find very rewarding after 38 years at Winmalee,â said Dr de Vries.

âI appreciate the enthusiasm and knowledge of general practitioners and I love using them to help them become great primary care physicians, and I also learn from them.
âFour of our current general practitioners are doctors that we have taken into account in their training and they now continue to contribute to the training of general practitioners.
He said the price “should really go to the whole practice, because the education and the pleasant environment are also owed to the other doctors and nurses.”
And he praised the work of Dr. Geoff Chew, who runs twice-weekly full practice meetings where they take turns presenting topics and cases – contributing to the practice’s continuous learning environment. .
Georgina van de Water, CEO of local GP Synergy education and training provider GP Synergy, said GP supervisors and GP staff are an essential part of training the next generation of GPs .
âGeneral practitioner supervisors play a crucial role in ensuring that these general practitioner registrars develop the skills and knowledge necessary to understand and meet the health care needs of the local population,â said Ms. van de Water.
âIn the Nepean, West and North Sydney area, there are over 360 accredited GP supervisors, training over 410 GP registrars.
âWhile there can only be one winner, the annual Supervisor of the Year award provides an opportunity to reflect and draw attention to the important contribution and dedication of all of our general supervisors.
She said GP Synergy was delighted to present this year’s award to Dr de Vries in recognition of his commitment to excellence in general medical education and training.
