Kevin McTernan’s name continues with new county trophy named in his honor
County Cork Chairman Marc Sheehan accepted the Kevin McTernan Cup Thursday night from the McTernan family at St Finbarr’s Hurling and Football Club. The cup will be presented to the winners of the Cork Senior A Football Championship, whose 2020 final will be played on Saturday between Éire Óg and Mallow (Páirc Uí Chaoimh, 7 p.m., broadcast live on IrishExaminer.com).
The McTernan family presented the cup in memory of Kevin, who died in 2017. A lifelong member of the St Finbarr club, he was a key member of the Blues mid-squad which brought the club back to the senior ranks in 2008.
“It is great that the County Board of Directors is awarding this cup to the winners of such a prestigious competition,” said St Finbarr club president John Cremin.
“Kevin was an exceptional clubman and everyone still misses him a lot. He was a great competitor but he also embodied all the values that would be dear to us at the club.
“When he passed it was a measure of the respect he had for the fact that there were so many members of other clubs as well as members of the Barrs at his funeral. That in itself showed how special he was, that they came to pay homage to him.
– Mallow vs Éire Óg will be broadcast live by the Irish Examiner. The game can be watched via this link on Saturdays.
