LSU is looking for a new football coach now that they have decided that Ed Orgeron will not return in 2022.
AD Scott Woodward has a history of swinging for the fences when it comes to hiring coaches, especially with his previous soccer coach hire – Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M.
During an appearance on ESPN’s “College Football Podcast,” on Sunday, SEC host Paul Finebaum said he had heard some believe that Woodward wanted to hire Dabo Swinney away from Clemson (via On3 Sports):
“There are some who think the DA Scott Woodward wants… you are ready for this… Dabo Swinney.” Now the president is said to want Mel Tucker (Michigan State Head Coach). Billy Napier (ULL head coach) might be a second-tier selection if everyone goes bankrupt. It looks like Jimbo (Fisher) is out of that one. Can James Franklin return to these? I do not know. But I think after yesterday James Franklin might look around and say, “What else can I do here? “
“It’s a good job (Penn State) but it sure doesn’t get any easier. It’s not really a big deal anymore when Clemson loses, but that loss yesterday, Matt, I mean, it was a dagger… It was a seismic loss.
Anyone who hires Woodward is going to have to make a splash right away. Fans are upset after 2 lackluster seasons after the 2019 national title race.
We’ll see who Woodward brings and if Swinney would even be interested in leaving for LSU. He denied any interest in the opening last week.
